I know few politicians very closely and I was very blunt enough in asking one of them: what makes politicians so corrupt? Is it the power? Is it the authority or the dependence of people on them?He chuckled and said to me My son, I must have spent more than fifty lakh rupees and I had to go through a lot of hardships to reach where I am today. Who do you think paid all the money, the party? No, I did from my own pocket and from where do I recover this amount?Politics is not social service, my son, its purely business!I have invested fifteen years of my life and all the money I had into politics. But he was also candid in accepting that In the process of recovering that money, the greed grows and grows further but as long as you also deliver what you promised to your people, you are safe. The moment you fail to do something, you come into public eye. He also smilingly asked me a question to which I had no answer. He asked Tell me, if you are so concerned about the society, the people and about all these things, why not join direct politics and change things by yourself, rather than grumbling against the politicians? We think democracy means just casting our vote and we think this is peoples power. When elections occur and I get an opportunity to vote, even if I know that there is a candidate who is a very honest man and is contesting the elections from my constituency, I am not going to vote for him because he is an independent candidate or represents a small party. My vote has to go to the major regional or national party because I know that these are the parties who are most likely to form a govt or say are viable contenders of power. At the same time, it is not possible even for the honest man to get the party ticket of a national or regional party because that also costs money. Even to campaign, it requires money. Another thing I have noticed that people majorly vote on regional issues rather than national ones.
